Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The primary purpose of the library is to support the University in its educational, research, and cultural endeavors through careful selection, acquisition, organization, and interpretation of information resources. In addition, Chesnutt Library assumes its special role as a major cultural resource for the community and region at large. This mission is accomplished by facilitating access to information and by teaching the skills necessary to be successful in using library resources.
The primary purpose of the Circulation Department is to assist library patrons in accessing library services and spaces and with the lending and borrowing of library resources in a quick and efficient manner to make them readily accessible to library patrons.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of the Access Service Librarian is to provide direction and leadership for access to library services, including use of spaces, circulation of library resources (books, media, technology, and other lending resources), electronic and traditional reserves, stack maintenance, interlibrary loan, distance education and participates in library committees and the library’s information literacy initiatives. This position serves as a direct liaison for the Library to the University Bookstore, which shares space in the Chesnutt Library building. This position supervises and evaluates staff, drafts policy and procedures and related workflow, and resolves problems and other issues relating to public services. This position manages the library’s integrated library system (ILS). The Access Services unit consists of 3 FTE permanent staff and approximately 15 Student Assistants.
Description of Work Continued:
Access Services Management (50%):
  • Manages all lending services including but not limited to Charges and Cischarges books; Reserve and AV materials, technology, and other library lending resources using the Library ILS and Online Computer Systems.
  • Review student status and place and or remove holds on accounts in Banner.
  • Trains supervises and schedules Circulation staff, which consists of 3 FTE permanent staff and approximately 15 work-study student assistants.
  • Manages circulation, reserve, patrons records and holds modules in Library ILS and online computer systems.
  • Manages library study rooms and public spaces within Springshare systems (i.e., Libcal)
  • Manages physical and digital permanent and faculty reserves.
  • Drafts access services policies and procedures and workflow and resolves problems and issues related to public service and access services.
  • Provides customer service to students, faculty, staff, and the University community relating to access services policies and procedures, including grievances and other related inquiries.
  • Prepares Monthly, Quarterly, and Annual Reports as related to access services;
  • Monitors operation and maintenance of the Library’s computers and networked printers/scanners.
  • Collect and deposit fines/fees and registration fees for Friends of the Library.
  • Manages People Counter, Customer Services Software modules, Springshare modules, and digital displays.
  • Records customer service statistics and information.
  • Manages Interlibrary Loan

Public Services (20%):
  • Provide assistance at the Reference Desk when scheduled.
  • Provides library instruction as requested.
  • Serves as Library Liaison to assigned departments and University Bookstore.
  • Develops and manages assigned libguides and tutorials for library services.
  • Supervise public spaces and stack maintenance, including administration of study rooms, collaborative spaces, and other public use spaces, including Stack Maps and other related displays and resources.
Library Initiatives and Student Engagement (15%):
  • Participates in Library, University Committees, and UNC System Committees.
  • Participates in and develops programs, displays, and other activities to promote student engagement.
  • Advises on improvements and needed resources, programs, staff development and other resources related to public services.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Professional Activities and Professional Development (5%):
  • Participates in professional development workshops, seminars, conferences, and other professional activities.
  • Develops workshops and training for Library staff on current trends related to access services and public services.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:
MLS is from an ALA-accredited program at an accredited institution or higher education.
Experience working in an academic library and operating in a library.
Experience with Library ILS and related systems.
Relevant Library and supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with an OCLC WMS and/or ALMA systems.
  • Experience with Springshare systems.
  • Supervisory Experience
