Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The mission of the Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Material Sciences (CPMS) is to prepare our majors for in-demand careers in industry and government, as well as the successful matriculation into and graduate and professional programs through rigorous coursework, laboratory training, and research mentorship. Accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Department offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Chemistry, with six concentrations in General Chemistry, Materials Science, Biochemistry, Pre-Health, Pre- Pharmacy, and Chemical Entrepreneurship, and it also offers a Materials Science Graduate Certificate, as well as academic minors in Chemistry, Physics, and Materials Science. The Department is equipped with many state-of-the-art analytical instruments in our Core Instrument Facility, such as a 400 MHz JEOL NMR, Nano LC-Orbitrap MS/MS, HPLC, GC/MS/MS, GC, ICP-OES, DSC, AFM, XRD, UV-Vis, Raman, Fluorescence, FTIR, FTIR Microscope, CE, etc., and operates the FSU Planetarium, Observatory, Southeastern North Carolina Regional Microanalytical and Imaging Consortium (SENCR-MIC) and Interdisciplinary Materials Research and Education Laboratory (IMREL).

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of the position is to provide management of the Core Instrument Facility, including the routine cryogen refill of the JEOL 400 MHz NMR. The position supports the research and teaching activities of the department by ensuring that all Core Instrument Facility instruments are operational; providing training to students, faculty, staff, and external users on the safe operation of the instruments; assists with data collection and analysis; and enforcing laboratory safety procedures of all laboratory users. The position requires excellent communication skills with outside stakeholders, such as instrument technicians and vendors, as well as detailed an organized recordkeeping of instrument service, chemical and instrument inventory, and training workshops.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Lecturer/Core Instrument Facility Manager would have a 50% teaching load (6 credits per semester) comprising mainly lower-division chemistry and physical science laboratory courses, and the other 50% effort would involve maintaining the organization and operation of the instruments within the FSU Core Instrument Facility. This is an 11-month position, with July as the non-contracted month, and requires working hours from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm on Monday through Friday, except for North Carolina State holidays.

The Core Instrument Facility Manager is expected to complete an array of duties, including, but not limited to:

A minimum Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related disciplines is required. Prior teaching experience is preferred. The desired candidate will have at least 2 to 3 years of experience in cryogenic transfer and handling for NMR maintenance, as well as other routine maintenance of major and standard chemical instrumentation.
