NV5's Cary, NC office is seeking an entry level Mechanical and Piping Designer to support our growing Planning and Design Group! The Mechanical and Piping Designer I is responsible for designing portions of projects in their discipline. This person is assigned specific tasks on the project team and expected to use their education, experience, and other resources available to them to resolve the engineering problems and tasks assigned.

The ideal candidate will have 0-5 years of mechanical and/or plumbing design experience with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related degree such as an associate degree or trade school certification in mechanical engineering, drafting, or mechanical design.

The ideal candidate will possess a working knowledge of the principles of mechanical design and have prior experience with AutoCAD and Revit. The candidate should have reasonable computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Interested applicants must be able to commit to a hybrid work schedule with at least 3 days in the Cary, NC office.

Responsibilities

Performs entry level mechanical design/engineering tasks under the supervision of a senior designer, senior engineer, and/or department head including, but not limited to the following:

    Under the supervision of a senior designer or engineer, is able to design and layout routine portions of a project using AutoCAD MEP, Revit, or other means.
  • Take conceptual rough plan mark-ups and create final design documents, under the supervision of a senior designer or engineer.
  • Perform engineering calculations and utilize various Microsoft and Third-Party software packages (including Trane TRACE, HAPS or eQUEST) related to various portions of the design package, such as heating, cooling, ventilation, energy modelling calculations, and equipment sizing.
  • Research, specify, size, and select equipment.
  • Assist in the preparation of studies, performing field surveys, documenting existing conditions, and/or recommending various design solutions.
  • May obtain and document field data by conducting field visits on project sites both in state and out of state. May require overnight travel.
  • Performs BIM/CAD functions in the mechanical discipline and will use Revit and/or AutoCAD MEP to transfer design concepts to a format acceptable to the client, architect and/or construction company in accordance with NV5 standards. Eventual proficiency expected.
  • Obtains knowledge of building codes and stays current with building code changes.
  • Attends in-house seminars and approved educational opportunities outside of the office.
  • Participates in technical and professional societies.
  • Maintains a neat and organized work area which allows efficient access to information required by other team members.
Qualifications
  • A qualified candidate for this position will have zero (0) to five (5) years of demonstrated mechanical design experience.
  • Must possess a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related degree such as an associate degree or trade school certification in mechanical engineering, drafting, or design.
  • Must be competent with the use of AutoCAD MEP and Revit as a design software. A Revit assessment will be performed to verify skill level.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the principles of mechanical design.
  • Must be able to travel to project sites both in and out of state, as needed or required. May require overnight travel on occasion.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in the operation of a computer and with the use of Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Proficiency with use of design software common in our industry is highly valued.
  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (EIT) is highly valued.
  • Must be able to commit to a hybrid work schedule with at least 3 days in the Cary, NC office.
  • Must always conduct themselves in a professional manner.
